The text seeks to socialize Alzemi Machado's speech in thanks for two honorary motions, one from the Florianópolis City Council and the other from the Legislative Assembly of Santa Catarina. These honors were given in recognition of the work of this librarian (who worked at the Public Library of the State of Santa Catarina and is about to retire), dedicated to the areas of education and culture. The discourse mixes personal, professional and political history and memory, such as that of the Public Library itself (the oldest active public institution in the state), the Digital Library of Santa Catarina and its employees. A critical view of politics and public affairs permeates the entire speech. It emphasizes the Public Library's contribution to training, culture and education in Santa Catarina, defending its administrative and financial autonomy. The administrative/organizational link to the Catarinense Foundation for Culture puts it in a situation of flagrant neglect, as it hasn't acquired books for years, contrary to the State Book Policy. Among the dreams of this professional dedicated to the public cause is for the Public Library to become a Foundation.
